The Waveform vs. the Spectrum
Time Domain Analysis is simply the use of the waveform instead of the spectrum to help diagnose machine problems. As we learned in the frequency analysis section of the Vibration Fundamentals course, the spectra of an impulse or transient and of a random signal may look almost exactly alike. This is true even though the parent time signals are very different in character.
The waveform immediately shows the difference, however, and therefore it is a good idea for the analyst to examine the waveform when the spectrum may not provide all the information needed to make a complete diagnosis.
