AC Electric Motors
There are two types of AC electric motors; the synchronous motor and the induction motor, and single phase or 3-phase current may power each of the types. In industrial applications, 3-phase motors are by far the most common, owing to their higher efficiency than single-phase units. The synchronous motor is much less prevalent than the induction motor, but is used in some special applications requiring absolutely constant speed, or for power factor correction. Induction and synchronous motors are similar in many respects, but differ in some details.
