The rotor and stator of AC motors are made of thin laminations that are isolated from each other. This prevents magnetically induced currents from circulating in the iron and cause heating. If the laminations are shorted together in some locations, local heating and resultant thermal warping will occur. Shorted laminations also cause higher 120 Hz vibration levels.
